Peru - Lima

Heidi and I left for Peru on a 2am flight last Saturday night.  The trip started off quite promisingly, as Taca Airlines (possibly only known for having their plane crash in the Honduras a month ago and splitting into three pieces), upgraded us to first class for our flight from LAX to El Salvador.  Heidi quickly settled into the idea of a luxury vacay, and was quite put out when we didn't get the same treatment from El Salvador to Lima.

Having less than 24 hours in the city - we dropped off our bags at the Casa Andina and started wandering around.  We stayed in Miraflores, which is a more upscale, seaside location where a we were told a lot of Peruvians go for holiday.  Of course they could have told us anything and we'd have believed them.

The first stop was some coffee for Heidi, where she used some elaborate hand movements and spoke very loudly trying to indicate she wanted "non-fat milk? San grasso?" to which she received a lot of blank stares.  Next stop was the Parque Kennedy- where there were some small shops and a Dance Revolution set up where we amused ourselves watching some pre-teen Peruvians shake their money-makers along to the colored indicators.  Heidi then dragged me into the local market to see how the other half lives, and we were both fascinated by the bagged milk on display.

Then we found the Larcomar- which is a pretty new retail development that has been carved right out of the cliffs leading to the Pacific.  In addition to all the many US chains including a Hooters, there was also a "smoking lounge" where all the furniture was fashioned to look like burning cigarettes, and a theater showing a musical comedy on "La Famiglia Fernandez," which of course we were thrilled about.

As it got dark, we decided to take a stroll through the famous Parque del Amor- where all the Peruvian lovers, young and old, go to make out.  It's a nice stroll along the cliffs, with dramatic uplit sculptures, rose gardens, and all the street lights are designed to look like hearts at certain angles.  I expressed how much I  missed Ben and my sister responded with rolling eyes.

We topped off the night at the seaside restaurant Rosa Nautica, which was built on an old British-style pier and was rather tasty.
