Viola Maria Manetti (note the color change of the blog) was born this afternoon to the happy parents of Kate and Nicco! She is 7 pounds and 4 ounces of perfect. It's really too exciting for words!
Last night, Kate's parents and I had a great dinner with Kate and Nicco. Seeing as I am leaving tomorrow morning, I was calmly and quietly resigning myself to missing the birth of this blessed babe (ie- I burst into tears at dinner), and apparently Miss Viola heard my cries because she started knocking around 1am. Auntie Amie is very pleased. Kate was a ridiculous trooper, and so brave and calm during the whole process- though she did admit the whole "birthing a baby" thing hurt like a hell she'd never imagined. Go figure. I just feel so lucky to have been here to witness this little miracle.
Oh. I should probably mention that I was not only the person who got to choose Viola's first outfit (from an array of fine outfits that only a Florentine baby could have acquired already), but I was ALSO the first person other than Kate and Nicco to hold Viola in all her little bundle of perfectness. I think the plan was to have her go from me to Mark and Emily- but after I held her, the hospital people then obsconded with the baby for a variety of check-ups and Kate's poor parents had to wait several hours for the same honor. We softened the blow by visiting the brand new Four Seasons across the street while the Italian fan club descended upon the new parents.
The Viola/Kate fan club. (Viola is also a Florentine soccer team so the options for attire are endless! I believe our shirts literally translate to "Viola is born" and roughly to "Viola fan for life")
