Valentine's in Venice

Following our incredibly exhausting and stressful time in Florence, Ben and I went to relax in Venice.  Seriously that's all we did.  We ate, we slept a lot (12 hours a night), we would get up, eat some more, meander about the breathtakingly beautiful calle's, and repeat...
Our first day we made it to Piazza San Marco, took the obligatory thousands of photos of architecture and pigeons.

On Valentine's Day, failing to arise before noon, and missing our chance for the "Secret Itinerary Tour of the Doge's Palace," we decided to start off with the Peggy Guggenheim museum at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni.

The whole collection is stunning, but my favorite is Marino's "Angel of the Citadel" - for humor's sake alone. You can just imagine the stuffy visitors arriving at her front door and being faced with that.

The rest of the day was a blur of wandering.  I picked up a fun and chunky gold ring as a bauble to remember the trip by- Ben was getting annoyed that I hadn't bought myself anything (I think trying to justify his new clothing purchases) so we both won.

We went to the famous "Harry's Bar" - but were frankly underwhelmed when we walked in and were greeted by a bunch of silly Brits, 18 euro cocktails and no windows to appreciate the view, so we walked out and opted for Florian's in San Marco's for some deliciously dark hot cocoa instead.

We wanted to buy some keepsake for the house, but as the day was passing, we were debating more and more outrageous possibilities, including $700 lampshades and a $7,000 painting. Luckily we went empty-handed back to the hotel as it was time for another nap before dinner.

We headed to a restaurant called "Testiere" near the Rialto for Valentine's Day dinner.  We took a vaporetto there, meeting this lovely old dame who is from Philly but spends 3 months a year in Venice.  Quite a coincidence since I had just been telling Ben that itinerary is exactly what WE should be doing as well.

Our last day in Venice, we spent wandering aimlessly, which sounds a bit like a record on repeat- but really, we just got lost in the little streets ate, slept and had and overall very relaxing and romantic little jaunt to Venice!
